Beneficial bacteria inhibit harmful fungi in various crops

Biocontrol uses substances, technologies or mechanisms derived from nature to control insect pests, diseases and weeds in agriculture and forestry. Biocontrol products generally fall into the following categories, depending on the “active ingredient” of each:

  • invertebrate macrobials (i.e. natural predators and parasites),
  • microbials (i.e. algae, bacteria, fungi and viruses),
  • semiochemicals (i.e. pheromones, attractants and repellents),
  • extracts from plant products (e.g., essential oils, chrysanthemum and mimosa extracts), and
  • other natural substances (e.g. certain peptides, enzymes and RNA).

A new biofungicide has been introduced with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB24 bacterial strain, which offers fungicidal activity through three modes of action: forming a protective layer, releasing compounds that inhibit fungi and microbes, and activating a plant’s natural defence system to prepare for pathogen attacks. The product is effective against a wide range of foliar fungal diseases, including downy mildew, powdery mildew, botrytis and early blight. It can be used across Europe on several crops, such as grapes, cereals, gourds and nightshade flowering plants.

Both organic and conventional farmers use this biocontrol product due to its microbial origin, low application rates, and short re-entry and pre-harvest intervals. It also helps prevent pest resistance, ensuring long-lasting effectiveness, and it is safe for beneficial insects, promoting biodiversity.

When used as part of an IPM strategy, this microbial biofungicide complements traditional methods, genetics and crop management practices. In fact, field trials show that it increases pest control by 25 percent. It significantly reduces the chemical load on crops, allowing growers to meet tightening residue level regulations and food chain standards.
