On the 25th of November 2025, the European Parliament took a decisive step toward a more sustainable and innovation-friendly agricultural future by adopting its own-initiative report on “Ensuring Faster Registration and Uptake of Biological Control Agents.”
Drafted by MEPs Alexander Bernhuber (EPP) and Anna Strolenberg (The Greens), the report passed with an overwhelming majority of 590 votes in favour, sending a strong political signal in support of biocontrol solutions across the European Union.
This vote represents a significant milestone for the entire biocontrol community. During the debate, co-rapporteur Alexander Bernhuber underlined the importance of maintaining a full toolbox for farmers, emphasising that faster and more proportionate authorisation processes for biocontrol products are essential to ensure competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability in European agriculture.
The Biocontrol Coalition welcomes all the suggestions in the report for amending Reg (EC) 1107/2009 to improving the process for bringing biocontrol products to the EU market.
Most notably for our work, the adopted resolution calls on the European Commission to consider the creation of a dedicated, fit-for-purpose regulatory framework for biocontrol products. Such a framework would better reflect the specific characteristics of biological solutions and address long-standing bottlenecks in registration and market access and is a complement to immediate amendments.
For the Biocontrol Coalition, this vote is far more than a procedural achievement. It marks a meaningful step toward our long-term vision: an enabling European framework that allows farmers across the EU to access a wide range of biocontrol products within a true Single Market. Faster registration pathways and greater support for biocontrol innovation are essential for making Europe a welcoming, forward-looking environment where sustainable agricultural solutions can flourish.
