The Biocontrol Coalition is a multi-stakeholder coalition, bringing together farmers and grower organisations, biocontrol producers, regulatory consultancies, research organisations and NGOs. It advocates for the European Union to rethink its framework for agriculture and food, particularly for biocontrol, so that the EU proactively fosters innovation whilst ensuring health, safety, and environmental protection. We want Europe to become a welcoming, enabling environment for biocontrol innovation.
“An enabling European framework to give EU farmers access to a wide range of biocontrol products, supporting the transition to more sustainable food systems.”
There is already proof of concept for our vision of an enabling, forward-looking European framework. In the feed sector, a single authority conducts timely, one-step evaluations where claims-based efficacy is evaluated in the context of intended use. This type of system enables the pooling of expertise and resources, shortens time to market, and removes the bottlenecks caused by a fragmented, two-tier registration and authorisation process. A single authority would ensure harmonised interpretations of the rules across the EU.
The common catalogues of varieties of agricultural plant and vegetable species that can be marketed in the EU provide another model.
We believe that the development of a framework that fosters biocontrol innovation will help us achieve these goals and will contribute to sustainable food systems!
